Why second-choice materials ?Steel mills aim to have 0 defects in the production process but, inevitably, errors occur.
To be considered “second”, a small flaw is sufficient. This doesn`t mean that the product is unusable. There are many reasons why a product may be declassified: it may not be quite straight or flat, it may have surface defects, the weld might not be flawless, the tolerances might not be according to the norm, the length might not be according to customer orders.
Even though secondary steel doesn`t come with 3.1 quality certificates, it is still very good for many uses. If you don’t need mill certification, secondary steel can be the right choice. If you are cutting smaller pieces, rust is not a problem, or you simply want to save a lot of money in material costs, you should consider second choice steel.
Advantages:The main advantage of second choice steel is the small price. Compared with prime material, second choice comes at a significant discount.
Second choice products have the same chemical composition as prime material.
In most cases, the mechanical properties are similar to prime material, especially for the ones with surface defects.
Overall, the price-quality ratio is superior for secondary products. When buying, you get great value for your money.
